Benjamin Hardin Helm was the son of Governor John L. Helm, and was born in Hardin County, Ky.; graduated at the West Point Military Academy, and in the law department of the Louisville University; in 1855 was a member of the Legislature; in 1856, Commonwealth’s Attorney for this Judicial District; married a daughter of R.S. Todd, of Lexington, Ky.; in 1861 he entered the Southern army as a Colonel and was promoted Brigadier General. Sept. 20, 1863, at the battle of Chickamauga, he was killed. Many testimonials were given to his patriotism, integrity and good judgment. He was buried in the Atlanta cemetery.
